Meeting with the Mind

                                                       NPL - Day 18

Mind is the intellectual or rational faculty in man; the understanding, the intellect; the power that conceives; judges or reasons; also the entire spiritual nature; the soul. The Conscious mind consists of everything inside of our awareness.

There is a difference between Mind and Conscious Mind:
A beggar comes to us begging for something. Our Mind says No, but our conscious says Yes. Here the Mind stops us from doing good and the Conscious wants us to do good.
There was once a Bullock cart rider. His bulls were not moving forward even after beating them. He was worried that if the bulls don't move, how would he reach his destination? A Saint was going on the way. He asked the man," What are you doing?"
The man replied," My bulls are not moving forward even after beating them."
The Saint said," What you are doing is wrong."
The Saint then kept green grass at some distance from the bulls and the bulls started walking. He kept doing the same until the bulls reached the destination of 3 kms.The man told the saint that he did not know this technique earlier. The Saint replied that a Man's mind is like this. Our mind keeps running and running behind the worldly things until the day of our death.

Guruji has discussed the following points to understand the Mind:
1. Minds Demand - Religion or Sin?

We pray to God for Wealth, Health, Beauty, Success, Name and Fame. In case our wish comes true some day, then what are our plans for the future? Our future plan is to be happy or to be sad, or to give what we have got as charity or spend on ourselves for luxurious items? In future if something good happens to you what are your plans? What would we like to do? What would we like to be?
A 5 year old boy once came to Guruji along with his father. Father informed Guruji that his son has controlled his mind and did not eat anything after sunset. Son informed Guruji that he gets Rs 10/- from his father for not eating after sunset. This went on for 4 months continuously. After 4 years the boy met Guruji again and said that he did not get Rs 10/- one day as he could not control his mind and had an ice cream at a wedding reception. Now he was 9 years old and had collected Rs. 14000/-
Guruji asked him," What will you do with this money?"
The boy replied," I wish to build a big temple with this huge amount of money".
This shows that a small boy also can have such pure thoughts. Then why not we?
Suppose someone else gives us Rs 1 Crore and asks us to spend it as per our wish, then what are our plans? What would we like to do? Does our mind want luxuries, car, bungalow or  does our mind wish to give the money in charity or for doing some good work?
When we don't have Rs 1 Crore, our mind does not think of building a temple and even when we don't have Rs 1 Crore, we think of buying a Mercedes!
We have to leave the sins that we are doing and delete those sins of mind, that we have not yet done or have not got an opportunity to do and do not invite them as well.
It depends on us what we want to be or do.

2. Minds Demands -No Sorrow or Perfection?

What do we pray to God - In my life there should be no sorrow or In my life there should be no imperfection? We always think of reducing our sorrows in life, but do we think of making our selves perfect or at least try to remove some defects in us? Only the person who has the strength to remove imperfections can meet God. A Saint's life does not attack Sorrow but on Imperfections. A Saint always tries to make himself perfect.
If some one invites us to their house and insults us, then what disturbs us? The fact that they insulted us or the fact that we hungry for respect? Did tears ever flow our of our eyes thinking about the imperfections in us?
Tulsidas completed the Ramayan. Ram then asked Tulsidas, " What do you want?"
Tulsidas then asked Ram," Did you attack Raavan's Lanka because of your wish or because of Raavan's wish?"
Ram replied," Why would Raavan want me to attack Lanka? It was due to my own wish that I attacked Lanka."
Tulsidas replied, " In the same way, I want you to attack my heart and sit in my heart and remove all the imperfections in me".
So why is there so much of insanity(madness) to end sorrow?
A man on the lower berth of the train was smoking and the smoke was irritating the one on the upper berth. He then asked him not to smoke. But the lower berth man said that he cannot do anything as the smoke's nature is to go up.
The Upper berth man then poured water on the lower berth man. The man below shouted and asked what he was doing. The upper berth man replied that he cannot do anything as the water's nature is to go down.
The lower berth man then stopped smoking. Likewise, a man's nature is also similar.
What do we want to do? Remove sorrows from our life or remove imperfections?

3. Minds Demand - Clarification or Purification?

Mind is that which has interest in clarification and Conscious mind is that which has interest in Purification.
If someone points out at our mistakes do we try to give excuses and clarifications or accept the mistakes and try to change ourselves? What is our nature? Why do we always try to give clarifications for our mistakes and not try to actually correct them.  Every man makes a mistake. But it is in our hands to correct them.
For eg. A man is trying to learn car for the first time. He puts an L board on his car to let people know that he is learning. Does his ego hurt in this case? Does he think of what people think about him?  The Man actually feels safe that no one will dash him and also others are aware that the man is learning and will give him way and go.
The person who gives clarifications is slave to 4 things in life:
a.) Argument
b.) Thoughts
c.) Mind
d.) Ego
A heart that wants purification is not slave to any of these.
Today, we point out our parent's mistakes and blame them. We have a feeling of hatred against anyone who tries to correct us. We have to actually accept our mistakes without arguing.
For eg. Once Acharyaji went with his disciple from house to house to take food( गोचरी). Some mistake happened by one of them. Their Guruji pointed out at Acharyaji even though it was not his mistake.
He then asked his Guruji in the moon light," It was not my mistake but I was punished?"
Guruji then replied," I saw the ability in you and hence I pointed out at you so that the mistake will not be repeated. But if you want, I will never point out at your mistakes the next time."
Acharya ji started crying and fell on Guruji's feet that he will never argue.
Acharyaji is today in front of us giving the preachings due to his Guruji who made him strong.
What is our attitude towards the person who points out at our mistake. Todays generation go to rave parties, drug parties and dress up vulgarly. Their Parents are not aware of what their children are upto. Parents are no more proud of their children and do not even care what their children are doing as they are not ready to listen to them. Parents are dumb in front of their parents as they cannot say anything. Children are not ready to listen to anything. We give clarifications all the time and don't like anyone who points out at our mistakes.
If a Guru becomes silent in front of his disciple, the disciple is unfortuante.
A charity was going on in a temple and people were telling how much they can donate. The father declares rs 5 Lakhs and the son sitting behind, declares 11 Lakhs. The father comes to know that this is his own son and is very happy that his son is ahead him and will definitely take his legacy(विरासत) forward.
Even Sachin Tendulkar cannot clarify in front of the umpire even if he is given Out though he was not. He has to leave the field without argument though he is a champion.
Just as treasures are uncovered from the earth, so virtue appears from good deeds, and wisdom appears from a pure and peaceful mind. To walk safely through the maze of human life, one needs the light of wisdom and the guidance of virtue.

4. Minds Demand - Wall or Bridge?

What is our interest in? To build a wall with others or a bridge? When we go somewhere, what is our identity? What do people recognize us as? Do they recognize us as the one who builds relations with others or the one who breaks relations? The common factor between God, Saint and a Noble person is that they build bridges. The one who is interested in building walls can never become God, Saint or a Noble person.
A bridge brings the far ones close to us and a wall takes away the close one's away from us.
For eg. Lord Mahavira had a glow of serenity and compassion on his face. Chandkaushik was angry as Lord Mahavira was standing on his land. He became very angry and blew poisonous venom towards Lord Mahavira 3 times. He also bit Lord Mahavira's toe. But Lord Mahavira was not disturbed by this and also did not become angry. Lord Mahavira had love and affection for him.
So similarly, what is our identity in life? Do we want to build relations or break them?

Mind is one that talks but does not listen and Conscious is that one that listens but does not talk.
Let's try not to have jealousy, anger or hatred feeling towards anyone.
Lets Meet our Mind!
